President Nayib Bukele said on his social networks that after 21 days of the economic reopening, «we do not see a sustained increase in the cases detected.» He also mentioned that there are more than 2,600 empty beds in hospitals and calls to 132 also remain low.
He mentioned that «our epidemiologists believe that this result is the direct effect of the massive use of masks. Without having a hard data, El Salvador could be one of the countries with the most use of masks per capita. Around 0.65, that is, 65% of the population «.5
However, Francisco Alabí, Minister of Health, said on September 14th, that the COVID-19 test will also be requested for people who enter the country by land as of September 19th.
This measure is in addition to the one announced days ago by the Autonomous Executive Port Commission (CEPA), to request proof of COVID at the International Airport to passengers who arrive in the country by air from any destination and of any nationality.
The official also indicated that «there would be some exceptions» around those who enter by land.
Although, he explained that there are a number of tests for Salvadorans entering the country, but that it should be taken into account that this can generate complications and waiting times while the results are obtained.
Alabí also commented that for Salvadorans who wish to leave the country and go to another where they request a certified test, they have the option of going to a private laboratory to do it or looking for a place where tests are done.6
