The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, announced on April 22th, 2021 that people over 55 years of age will begin to be vaccinated against covid-19.
The Central American country has received 1,351,080 vaccines from the pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Sinovac, including 181,080 acquired through the Covax Mechanism of the World Health Organization (WHO), 150,000 donated by China and 1.02 million purchased by the Government. The Government of El Salvador hopes to achieve “herd immunity” with the immunization of 4.5 million people, for which it would need 9 million doses.
Also, El Salvador began the process of vaccinating hundreds of journalists against COVID-19, whom the health authorities consider second-line personnel since many cover hospitals and immunization and testing centers.
For now the authorities have ruled out a new confinement and have called on the population to continue with biosecurity measures.
El Salvador has applied the first dose to doctors and health personnel, soldiers, police, teachers, and administrative personnel of public and private schools and universities.
