The General Directorate of Migration and Immigration of El Salvador revealed to CNN that Avianca airline will be fined up to US $ 6,000. The decision was made after staff detected at the San Óscar Arnulfo Romero airport, located 40 kilometers from the city of San Salvador, that a passenger from Los Angeles, California, had a Covid-19 test with a positive result.
“Our Migration officers stationed at the airport noticed that the Covid-19 test presented could clearly perceive it to be positive. So the protocols with the Ministry of Health were activated for their isolation, “wrote Ricardo Cucalón, Director of Migration of El Salvador
The fine to Avianca airline is the second imposed by the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration of El Salvador. The first was against Spirit Airlines for allowing a passenger with COVID-19 to fly from Houston, Texas, to San Salvador on January 7th.
Spirit told to CNN that it began an investigation to determine how the passenger was able to board the plane. Also, that it would take the appropriate measures to comply with the requirements demanded by each country to which it travels.
Until January 11th, El Salvador registered 49,539 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 1,447 deaths, according to figures from the Ministry of Health. The authorities are on alert due to the increase in hospitalizations and deaths in recent weeks. The government attributes the spike in cases to the fact that many relaxed personal protections measures during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Precisely, because for now there are no restrictions on mobility.
