On August 13th, the president of Mexico (Andrés Manuel López Obrador) and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs (Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon), announced that the vaccine against COVID 19 may be available in the first trimester of 2021.1
The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, informed about the details of the agreement between the government of Mexico, Argentina, the pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca and the Slim Foundation to produce and distribute the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford.
The purpose of AstraZeneca, the Slim Foundation and the University of Oxford is to guarantee that Latin America could have access to this vaccine and the current estimate for production would be from 150 to 250 million vaccines.2
On the other hand, after 11 weeks of the “New Normality”, Campeche became the first state of Mexico to change in the epidemiological traffic light from orange to yellow, meanwhile, there are six states that are still in red light, which are: Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Colima, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and Hidalgo. The other twenty five states will continue in orange color.3
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is still in orange alert and the government announced the regulations that will apply for this past weekend.
- Supermarkets can operate at 50% of their capacity and only the food, beverage and cleaning products sections can be open.
- Restaurants can only operate for delivery or take out.
- Beauty parlors and shops will remain closed
During the week, establishments like restaurants, shops, beauty parlors can operate at 50% of their capacity.
The vehicle restriction will be one day during the week and one day during the weekend.4
Guatemala
The president of Guatemala (Alejandro Giammattei) announced that 11 municipalities are in red light and maintaining all the regulations which are:
- Vehicle restriction from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
- Alcoholic beverages sale is prohibited from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
- Work schedule for government institutions is from 7:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m.
169 municipalities are in red light, 100 are in orange light and 71 are in yellow light, with this information, he asked the citizens to maintain the social distancing and the use of face masks.5
El Salvador
The President of El Salvador (Nayib Bukele) announced a plan for the opening of economic activities for August 24th, which includes the distribution of medicines.
The government plan includes the provision of 1,125 beds in the network of public hospitals, and making more proofs to detect new infections.
The government will announce the areas with the greatest contagion to avoid visits to infected municipalities, and will also deliver medicines to have a “lower mortality and help decongest hospitals”.6
