The millennial generation was born between 1980 and 2000, and nowadays is shaping the world. Thanks to their career aspirations, thoughts about working, and knowledge of technology they could define the culture of the 21st century workplace.
Millennials are ambitious to move up in their careers, by 2020, this group will represent 50% of the world’s workforce, being this critical to the success and sustainability of businesses, even though loyalty to organizations is not a particularly strong value among this generation.
They are not searching for new and more interesting jobs, they actually, do not want jobs, they stopped believing in the concept of sitting in front of a desk for a whole “working day” trying to look busy for a boss, they want to live their lives and are not willing to give up their lifestyle for a career; they measure productivity by work completed, not by time spent in an office.
Reasons why 90% of millennials want a social and fun workplace, and 88% say that a positive company culture is essential to their dream job as well as they feel motivated if they feel an intellectual stimulation.
They see a different panorama, because they are digital natives, being heavy users of the new technologies means they have a firm grasp on how to use these tools, make them useful and do things like build relationships, crowdsource solutions, and research information on demand to add meaningful value from anywhere at anytime.
This new executive profile travels extensively and values time and flexibility. Thanks to technology and communications, millennials have grown up into a multi-cultural world which makes them more empathic and able to work in a team with diverse co-workers.
This profile is team-oriented, they cooperate and want to make friends with the people at work because they believe that a team can accomplish more and even create a better end result than traditional work plans.
Multifaceted and multitasking, millennials chose careers to live the life they desire and keep busy with after-work activities, such as going to gyms, volunteering, attending classes and social events. This generation grew up at a very fast speed, being this the main reason why they are highly comfortable going from activity to activity in their own world.
Millennials’ personal goals are kind of traditional, like seeking for a good job and have life balance, as well as striving for financial security, save money and make positive contributions to the world and also to their organizations.
They tend to leave jobs because they found new opportunities, more valuable to their inner development and will be more accommodating to their personal ambitions to continue expanding their skill sets and knowledge. Attracting the best of the millennial workers is critical to the future of businesses.
Millennials are in constant search for improvement and tend to have leadership skills; being this through all the jobs they have had, as well as by getting new degrees in education, with the help of mentors on organizations and online through websites to receive information and keep updated thanks to social networks.
It’s clear that millennials will be a powerful and highly demanded generation of workers because of their skills. They may be able to command and influence the way they work and where and how they operate in the workplace. They want a new management style, one that meets their need of being useful and recognised.
