Bucaramanga, a city located in the northeast of Colombia, is a lead to follow in consolidating a middle-class society, because it integrates the 55.9% of the city’s total population followed by 34.8% people in vulnerable middle class, 4.8% in low and 4.5% in high class. Below Bucaramanga appears Bogota with 53.3% and Medellin with 46.9% of consolidated middle class.
Regarding to that, Tatyana Orozco, Director of the DPS said that “it is important to highlight the consolidation of middle class in Colombia, which is above poverty for the first time. We have achieved this thanks to a higher economic growth and the incorporation of unemployed people to labor market.”
Furthermore, the director of the National Planning Department, DNP, highlights that Colombia has been experiencing a change in the economic sector that has contributed to its growth. With the economic slowdown, more jobs have been generated because the growth factors went from being intensive in capital to be intensive in workforce.
The fact that more people have moved into the middle class means that they have improved their income, which is also reflected in data published by the Statistics National Administrative Department (DANE). From July 2014 to June 2015, the income per capita of the unit of expenditure for Colombia’s total reached COP$579,932 in cities, COP$679,669 in towns and COP$247,866 in rural zones. Compared with previous years, these figures have increased 3.2%, 2.7% and 6.4%, respectively.
Therefore, Colombia stands out as a leader in reducing poverty in Latin America. According to IDB data between 2010 and 2014, Colombia has reduced poverty in 10.5%, while Peru did it in 6.97%, Brazil in 6.3%, Chile in 3.6% and Mexico in 0.6%.
Now, the great challenge for Colombia and its institutions is to maintain the downward trend in poverty while facing the effects left by a slowing economy such as an expected growth of 2.8% and an inflation above 4%.
