Since January, by dialing 911 in Mexico, you can access to all emergency services. As a crisis line, it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and replaces the previous system that required users to dial 060 for local police, 061 for state and Federal Judicial police, 065 for the Red Cross, 066 for the national system for citizen emergencies, 068 for firefighters and 080 for security calls.
This security measure of having 911 in México as a single number for all of these type of services, was announced in November 2014 by President Enrique Peña Nieto as part of his security plans for this year.
By making this change, it is easier for anyone in the country to call for help in any urgency, either you find yourself in a trip moving onto another city or if you are an expatriate resident in Mexico needing an ambulance, firefighters or the police.
Having a unique line for crisis such as 911 in Mexico, is also part of the cultural merging the world has been through for the last decade. Although, this security measure intends to be more trustable than calling the past numbers as well as being faster in its response.
911 in Mexico, for both fixed and mobile telephones, will be managed by the executive secretariat of the National Public Security System. Besides, telecommunications service providers have granted free access to the crisis number.
The most useful gadget you will always need when being at risk is a mobile phone. Remember, that the GSM network uses 112 as a world-wide emergency number to redirect you to the closest local dispatch.
